Measuring just over 1km, the Aberystwyth criterium has changed a few times over the years, but has now settled on this route which runs in a clockwise direction, circumnavigating the famous landmarks such as the Castle, War Memorial, Old College and Royal Pier whilst also coming into the town centre via Pier Street.
The start and finish is on Pier Street, nicely sheltered from the elements at the junction with Eastgate Street and New Street. The course then takes a right at the clock tower onto St James square / Upper Great Darkgate St as it passes the Market Hall and heads towards the Castle entrance, turning left here past the Theatre Castell and right onto SeaView Place. These two turns mark the end of the flat top section of the course as a welcome descent is navigated through SeaView Place before a sweeping right hand bend takes you onto the promenade and past the lower tower of Aberystwyth Castle, heading north.
Castle Point is a sharp flat right hand bend at the very tip of the promenade, followed by a long straight past the Old College building which overlooks Cardigan Bay.
The final corner is also the one which needs careful navigation. It is slightly off camber and also marks the start of the climb up through Pier Street towards the finish line.
The course is completely barriered and closed to traffic. The map above shows the public crossing points, marked in yellow, with first aid points also shown.
